The Burkina Faso healthcare system has taken a significant step forward with the introduction of MammaTyper, a state-of-the-art technology for diagnosing breast cancer. This innovative tool is now available at the University Hospital Centers (CHU) of Bogodogo in Ouagadougou and Pala in Bobo-Dioulasso, thanks to the Presidential Initiative for Health (IPS). MammaTyper enables healthcare professionals to identify the molecular subtype of a tumor, allowing for more targeted and effective treatment.
According to the World Cancer Observatory (Globocan), Burkina Faso recorded nearly 15,000 cancer cases and approximately 10,000 deaths in 2024. Breast cancer accounted for over 2,100 cases and around 1,000 deaths, which translates to almost three deaths per day. The introduction of MammaTyper is expected to improve diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer in the country. This technology provides accurate results in just six hours, a significant improvement over traditional methods.
Dr. Bruno Adjongba AWEH, a specialist in Histology-Embryology-Cytogenetics and reproductive biology at the CHU de Pala, explained that MammaTyper allows for personalized treatment based on the molecular subtype of the tumor. This approach eliminates the need for trial-and-error treatment, ensuring that patients receive the most effective care. The technology is being used for the first time in Africa, marking a significant milestone in the region's healthcare development.
Prior to the introduction of MammaTyper, patients had to be evacuated to other countries for this type of examination. The availability of this technology in Burkina Faso will significantly reduce the need for medical evacuations, saving time and resources. Medical professionals from the CHU de Pala and Bogodogo underwent training in Hamburg, Germany, to master the use of MammaTyper.
The Coordonnateur national de l'IPS, Dr. Drissa TRAORE, visited the two CHU to verify the functioning of MammaTyper and confirmed that the tests are being conducted with precision and accuracy. The technology is now accessible to all Burkinabè at subsidized rates. This development is a significant step towards improving healthcare services in Burkina Faso.
As part of the Octobre Rose 2026 campaign, the Minister of Health encouraged women to undergo free breast cancer screening. The introduction of MammaTyper is expected to boost cancer diagnosis and treatment in the country. The technology has been validated by the data interpretation and calculation platform, ensuring accurate results.
The implementation of MammaTyper is a testament to the efforts of the Burkinabè government to improve healthcare services. The technology will not only enhance breast cancer diagnosis but also contribute to the overall development of the country's healthcare system. With this innovation, Burkina Faso is taking a significant step towards reducing the burden of cancer and improving the health and well-being of its citizens.
