The Burkina Faso government has inaugurated Raffinor BF, the country's first gold refinery, in Ouagadougou. Located in the Ouaga 2000 area, the refinery aims to process a portion of the country's gold locally, rather than exporting it for refining abroad. This development marks a significant milestone in the country's efforts to maximize the value of its gold resources. The project was launched on November 23, 2023, with the laying of the foundation stone by Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

The refinery has a capacity to process 400 kg of gold per day, equivalent to approximately 150 tonnes per annum. The complex comprises a laboratory, a foundry, storage facilities, and a jewelry section. Additionally, the headquarters of the Société nationale des substances précieuses (SONASP) will be installed on the premises. By refining gold locally, the Burkinabè government aims to retain more value within the country and increase revenue.

The inauguration of Raffinor BF is a strategic move to strengthen the government's control over gold production and improve knowledge of the volumes and quality of gold extracted. In 2022, Burkina Faso produced 57,674 tonnes of industrial gold, according to the Ministry of Mines. The new refinery is expected to enhance the country's ability to monitor and regulate the gold sector, reducing the risk of smuggling and other illicit activities.

Captain Ibrahim Traoré emphasized the importance of refining gold locally, stating that the country would "refine it on site." This vision aligns with the government's goal of promoting local processing of mineral resources. The refinery's operationalization is a significant step towards achieving this objective, which is expected to have a positive impact on the country's economy.

The Burkinabè government anticipates that the refinery will increase public revenue and provide a boost to the local economy. By processing gold locally, the country can reduce its reliance on foreign refining and maximize the benefits of its gold resources. This development is also expected to create new opportunities for the local jewelry industry and other sectors.

Raffinor BF is a major investment in Burkina Faso's mining sector, which is a significant contributor to the country's economy. The gold sector plays a crucial role in generating revenue and creating employment opportunities. The refinery's inauguration marks a new era in the country's gold industry, with a focus on local processing and value addition.

The successful operationalization of Raffinor BF will depend on various factors, including the availability of gold feedstock, efficient operations, and effective regulation. The government will need to ensure that the refinery operates in a transparent and accountable manner, with robust safeguards in place to prevent smuggling and other illicit activities.
