The Faso Food and Drug Administration (Faso FDA) has issued a health alert regarding the presence of sildenafil in products from the "Cyclone" range, manufactured by YELEMANY BAA SARL, based in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso. Laboratory tests revealed that the substance, used to treat erectile dysfunction, was found in samples of juices marketed as "100% natural" beverages or dietary supplements. Sildenafil requires medical supervision due to potential risks, particularly for individuals with cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, elderly people, and those taking nitrate derivatives.
The Faso FDA has identified four products in the "Cyclone" range that contain sildenafil: Cyclone Classique, Cyclone Retard, Cyclone Sirop, and Cyclone Poudre, regardless of batch or purchase location. The agency has urged consumers to stop buying and consuming these products immediately. Anyone still in possession of these products is advised to cease using them right away. The Faso FDA has also warned that individuals experiencing symptoms such as chest pain, dizziness, blurred vision or hearing, or prolonged erections should seek medical attention promptly.
As a precautionary measure, the Faso FDA has suspended the production and sale of all "Cyclone" products. Distributors, wholesalers, and retailers are required to withdraw these products from their stocks and points of sale, quarantine them, and follow the instructions of Faso FDA inspection teams for their retrieval. This move aims to prevent potential harm to consumers who may have already purchased or consumed these products.
The Faso FDA has advised consumers to be cautious when encountering products that claim to enhance sexual performance, promote weight loss, or cure diseases. The agency has provided various channels for reporting adverse effects or obtaining information: a green line (CORUS) at 3535, WhatsApp at 52 25 30 30, Facebook pages "Faso FDA" and "Laafiako", a website (www.laafiako.minsante.bf), and an email address ([email protected]).
Dr. Arsène OUEDRAOGO, Director General of the Faso FDA, has expressed gratitude to the public for their vigilance and cooperation. He emphasized that protecting consumer health is a collective responsibility. The Faso FDA continues to monitor the situation and work with relevant stakeholders to ensure public safety.
Sildenafil, the substance found in the "Cyclone" products, can have serious side effects, particularly when used without medical supervision. Its presence in these products is not indicated on the labeling, which may lead consumers to unknowingly take risks. The Faso FDA's swift action aims to mitigate potential harm and prevent further distribution of these products.
The incident highlights the importance of regulatory oversight and consumer awareness in ensuring the safety of food and pharmaceutical products. The Faso FDA's alert and subsequent actions demonstrate its commitment to protecting public health and safety in Burkina Faso. Consumers are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious products or adverse effects to the relevant authorities.
