The Faso Food and Drug Administration (Faso FDA) has issued a warning to pharmacists, healthcare providers, and the general public about a product called "DengueMed", claiming it is being sold as a treatment for dengue fever. After verification, the Faso FDA found that "DengueMed" has no marketing authorization in Burkina Faso and is not listed in the national nomenclature of authorized pharmaceutical specialties and generic medicines.
The Faso FDA stated that the quality, efficacy, and safety of "DengueMed" have not been evaluated by a competent authority. As a result, the sale, dispensing, prescription, possession for sale, and use of "DengueMed" are prohibited nationwide, regardless of its presentation, batch, or supplier. The authority has instructed pharmacists, wholesalers, and healthcare providers to immediately withdraw the product from their shelves and stocks.
The Faso FDA has also instructed healthcare providers to report any adverse effects observed in patients who have used "DengueMed". Inspections will be conducted in pharmacies, pharmaceutical warehouses, and healthcare facilities to ensure compliance. Those found in possession of the product for sale or use after the ban may face administrative and criminal sanctions.
The Faso FDA has advised the public not to buy or use "DengueMed". In case of symptoms such as fever, headache, joint or muscle pain, people are recommended to seek medical attention at a healthcare center. For suspected dengue cases, the use of aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen should be avoided due to the risk of increased bleeding.
The authority has provided contact channels for the public and healthcare professionals to report the presence of "DengueMed" or seek additional information. These channels include a toll-free number, WhatsApp, Facebook pages, a website, and an email address. The Faso FDA relies on the collaboration and vigilance of healthcare professionals and the public to enforce this measure and protect public health.
Dr. Arsène OUEDRAOGO, Director General of the Faso FDA, emphasized the importance of adhering to this ban to ensure public safety. The authority will work to recover stocks of "DengueMed" and take action against those who fail to comply with the regulations.
The ban on "DengueMed" aims to prevent potential harm to the public, and the Faso FDA continues to monitor the situation to ensure that only authorized and safe products are available in the market. The authority urges everyone to prioritize their health and safety by using only approved medications and treatments.
