In a successful intervention, police in Burkina Faso have rescued an 18-year-old girl from a forced marriage. The girl, identified as Tall Mamounata, a student in the fifth grade at CEG Rakalo in the Imasgo department, was being taken to Boromo against her will. The rescue was carried out on November 3, 2026, at around 2 pm on the Koudougou-Sabou axis during a routine police check.

According to reports, Mamounata was being transported by a motorcyclist, who claimed she was traveling willingly. However, her physical state and demeanor raised suspicions among the police officers, prompting them to investigate further. When questioned, Mamounata revealed that she was being taken to Boromo against her wishes. The police then took both Mamounata and the motorcyclist to the Nando Regional Brigade for Child Protection for further investigation.

The investigation revealed that Mamounata had been given in marriage to the motorcyclist's younger brother, Tall Saïdou, despite her desire to continue her education. Saïdou had arrived in Imasgo to collect Mamounata and take her to Boromo to meet her supposed husband. When questioned by investigators, Saïdou admitted to the crime and attempted to justify it by citing local customs.

Further investigation revealed that a religious marriage ceremony had taken place in September 2026. However, this did not change the fact that Mamounata was a minor and had not given her consent to the marriage. The police have since charged Saïdou with forced marriage and presented him to the Koudougou prosecutor's office.

Mamounata has been handed over to the Boulkiemdé provincial family service to facilitate her return to Imasgo and enable her to resume her studies as soon as possible. The BRPE de Nando has summoned both families involved, but none had appeared by the time the report was filed. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the situation.

Forced marriage remains a significant challenge in Burkina Faso, with many girls being forced into unions they do not want. The authorities have been working to combat the practice, with a focus on protecting minors and upholding their rights. In this case, the swift action of the police has ensured that Mamounata can continue her education and avoid a potentially damaging and life-altering situation.

The case highlights the critical role that law enforcement and social services play in protecting vulnerable individuals, particularly young girls, from forced marriages. Authorities have urged anyone with information about forced marriages or suspicious activities to come forward and report them to the relevant authorities. The case against Saïdou is ongoing, and a verdict is expected in due course.
