New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman hopeful, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, has called on the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to release the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour-Awuah, on bail. Agyarko stated that Baffour-Awuah's continued detention was unnecessary. He argued that the MP's voluntary appearance before EOCO demonstrated that he was not a flight risk. Baffour-Awuah had presented himself to EOCO with his lawyers on October 1, 2026.
According to Agyarko, Baffour-Awuah's voluntary presentation to EOCO following an earlier attempt to arrest him at the Accra High Court on September 23, while representing a client, showed that he was willing to cooperate with investigators. Agyarko emphasized that keeping Baffour-Awuah in custody served no purpose that reasonable bail could not serve equally well. He stressed that the NPP was not seeking special treatment for its members but demanding fairness, due process, and respect for personal liberty.
Agyarko reiterated that no one was above the law, and the NPP did not ask for special treatment for any of its members. He stated that the party was demanding what every Ghanaian was entitled to under the 1992 Constitution: fairness, due process, the presumption of innocence, and the protection of personal liberty. Agyarko also urged investigative agencies to remain professional and impartial in discharging their duties.
The NPP chairman hopeful referenced concerns raised by the Ghana Bar Association over the arrest of lawyers on court premises while representing clients. He called on President John Mahama to ensure that security and investigative agencies exercised restraint and acted fairly, particularly in cases involving opposition figures. Agyarko emphasized the importance of maintaining public confidence in Ghana's institutions.
Agyarko subsequently urged EOCO to grant Baffour-Awuah bail and allow investigations to continue while he remained at liberty. He appealed to NPP supporters in Manhyia South, the Ashanti Region, and across the country to remain calm and express their solidarity peacefully and within the law. Agyarko assured them that the NPP would stand by every member who faced adversity.
The NPP chairman hopeful stated that the party would provide legal support, presence, and principle to its members in need. He emphasized that the NPP would not be intimidated or provoked and that the rule of law must prevail. Agyarko's call for Baffour-Awuah's release on bail was a significant development in the case.
The case has sparked concerns about the treatment of opposition figures and the role of investigative agencies in Ghana. Agyarko's statement highlighted the need for fairness and due process in the handling of the case. The NPP's stance on the matter is expected to have implications for the country's politics and institutions.
