BMW is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Nürburgring with a series of special edition M models, which will be available in limited numbers in South Africa. The 100 Jahre Nürburgring Editions will be offered in three variants of each model: M2, M3 sedan and Touring, M4 coupe, and the sedan and Touring versions of the M5. These exclusive models feature bespoke design elements, both inside and out, but do not have any mechanical modifications.
The exterior of the 100 Jahre Nürburgring Editions boasts a unique colour called Nürburgring Green, a nod to the track's nickname, the "Green Hell," coined by three-time Formula 1 champion Jackie Stewart. Each model features an outline graphic of the Nürburgring on its doors, complete with "100" and "Nürburgring since 1927" logos. Additionally, the M2, M3 sedan, and M5 sedan have special M graphics on their M carbon fibre roof, while the steel roof on the Touring models receives the same design elements.
Inside, the 100 Jahre Nürburgring Editions feature an embroidered outline of the Nürburgring track on the front seat headrests, which comes in black on the M5 models and in green on the M2, M3 sedan and Touring, and M4. All models have a black leather interior with green and white stitching, an M steering wheel trimmed in Alcantara with a grey 12 o'clock marking, and a special 100-year plaque on the cupholder lid in front of the gear lever. The M2 stands out with M carbon bucket front seats, while the rest of the range appears to be equipped with standard M Sport or Comfort front chairs.
Despite the exclusive design elements, the 100 Jahre Nürburgring Editions do not have any mechanical or dynamic changes, meaning their power outputs remain unchanged. The M2 retains its 353kW/600Nm from the S58 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six engine. The M3s and M4 feature the same engine, producing 390kW/650Nm, which is transmitted to all four wheels via the xDrive all-wheel drive system and eight-speed Steptronic gearbox.
The M5 combines a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine with an 18.6-kWh battery pack, powering a single 145kW/280Nm electric motor housed within the eight-speed gearbox. This results in a combined output of 535kW/1 000Nm, allowing for a top speed of 305 km/h and an all-electric range of 70 km. The transmission options for each model are not confirmed, but it is unclear whether all three models will feature the eight-speed Steptronic gearbox or the six-speed manual.
BMW South Africa has confirmed that three units of each model will be available in the country, but pricing details have not been disclosed. It is likely that prices will be announced once the allocated models arrive, either towards the end of the year or in 2027. The limited-edition M models are expected to attract attention from collectors and enthusiasts alike, given their unique design elements and exclusive nature.
