The government of Benin has announced plans to allocate 797.5 billion FCFA for climate-related public investments in 2027. This amount represents 51.25% of the total 1,545.2 billion FCFA in public investments programmed for the year. The move is part of the government's efforts to integrate climate change into its development planning and address the country's vulnerability to climate-related challenges.

The climate-related investments will focus on adaptation and mitigation measures. A total of 682.6 billion FCFA will be allocated to adaptation efforts, while 114.9 billion FCFA will be dedicated to mitigation measures. This allocation reflects the government's priority on building resilience to climate change impacts, such as coastal erosion, infrastructure degradation, and food insecurity.

The allocation of climate-related investments will be concentrated in four ministries. The Ministry of Environment and Transportation will receive the largest share, with 361.2 billion FCFA, followed by the Ministry of Energy, Water, and Mines with 127 billion FCFA. The Ministry of Higher Education and Research will receive 108.46 billion FCFA, while the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries will receive 60 billion FCFA.

These four ministries will account for over 82% of the total climate-related investments. This concentration of investments in a few sectors highlights the importance of transportation, energy, research, and agriculture in the government's climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts.

The government's decision to prioritize climate-related investments is driven by the need to address the country's vulnerability to climate change. Benin is highly vulnerable to climate-related impacts, including coastal erosion, flooding, and drought. The government's efforts to integrate climate change into its development planning aim to reduce the country's greenhouse gas emissions and build resilience to climate change impacts.

The climate-related investments will support the implementation of Benin's national development strategy, "Benin 2060 Alafia," and its third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0). The NDC 3.0 aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 33.7% by 2035. The investments will also support the country's efforts to achieve its sustainable development goals.

The effective implementation of these climate-related investments will be crucial in assessing their contribution to enhancing resilience, protecting infrastructure, and achieving national climate commitments. The government's efforts to prioritize climate change mitigation and adaptation will be critical in addressing the country's climate-related challenges and promoting sustainable development.
