The university transport service in Benin is set to resume on Monday, September 21, 2026, with a fleet of 63 new buses covering 12 cities. The service was officially launched on Sunday, September 20, at the former parking site of university buses at the University of Abomey-Calavi. The event was attended by several education sector officials and student representatives. This development aims to address the daily transportation challenges faced by students.
The new transport organization covers four public universities in Benin: the University of Abomey-Calavi, the University of Parakou, the National University of Agriculture in Kétou, and the National University of Sciences, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics in Abomey. The bus lines will serve Abomey-Calavi, Cotonou, Porto-Novo, Dangbo, Adjarra, Abomey, Dassa-Zoumè, Lokossa, Natitingou, Sakété, Kétou, and Parakou. This expansion was announced by the government during the Council of Ministers meeting on September 2, 2026.
Access to the transport service is based on a digital procedure. Students can purchase their transport tickets online using their Personal Identification Number (PIN). The announced fare is 200 FCFA for a one-way trip and 400 FCFA for a round trip. According to recent information, ticket purchases can be made through the UnivServices.bj platform. The management of the service has been entrusted to La Poste du Bénin, which already operates a passenger transport service by bus.
During the launch ceremony, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Sèdami Mèdégan Fagla, emphasized the importance of responsible use of the buses and preservation of the equipment. She stated that the government's goal is to alleviate the daily difficulties faced by students. The Minister also called on students to use the vehicles responsibly.
Marius Tchomakou, President of the National Federation of Benin Students (FNEB), highlighted the expected benefits of the transport service. He believes that it will enable students to devote more time to their studies, reduce certain expenses, and improve their travel conditions. The resumption of the service comes after more than three years of interruption.
The launch of the university transport service is part of the government's social measures for the 2026-2027 academic year. The government had announced nearly 30 billion FCFA in social measures covering various areas, including university transport, scholarships, catering, accommodation, health, and technical and vocational training.
