The Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation-Uganda (Baylor-Uganda), an indigenous not-for-profit child health and development organisation, is seeking to fill 7 Epidemiologist positions. The successful candidates will be based in Tororo, Uganda, and will support the Ministry of Health and Baylor Foundation Uganda in strengthening the integrated healthcare package. This includes surveillance at community and facility levels, acute febrile illness, mortality surveillance, and infection prevention and control.
The Epidemiologists will contribute to the timely detection, notification, verification, and analysis of public health events to inform public health actions. Key duties and responsibilities include data management and analysis, regional and district coordination and capacity strengthening, community disease surveillance, and health facility surveillance. The officers will work closely with the Regional Emergency Operations Centre (REOC) and district teams to ensure effective coordination and response to public health events.
The Epidemiologists will be responsible for collecting, validating, and cleaning surveillance data from community and health facility sources. They will submit timely reports and dashboards to the REOC and national task forces, and participate in REOC coordination meetings to contribute to response strategies. The officers will also ensure integration of mortality data into national surveillance systems, such as DHIS2 and EWARN.
In addition to data management and analysis, the Epidemiologists will support training and supervision of community health workers on death notification and verbal autopsy processes. They will coordinate community-based reporting of deaths and suspected SVD-related fatalities, and facilitate community engagement and awareness activities to improve death reporting. The officers will also work with local leaders and VHTs to verify and trace reported community deaths.
The Epidemiologists will provide technical guidance to health facility staff on accurate medical certification of cause of death. They will support implementation of Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) approaches to enhance surveillance data accuracy, completeness, and timeliness. The officers will also facilitate regular death review meetings in health facilities and mentor health facility staff on use of ICD-10 codes for death reporting.
To qualify for the position, candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in medicine, public health, or a related field, and a Master’s degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, or a related field. Additional training in field epidemiology is also required. Candidates must have at least 5 years of relevant experience in epidemiological and technical skills, disease surveillance, and outbreak investigation and response.
