Bayelsa State marked its 30th anniversary with a dinner and awards night, celebrating its creation on October 1, 1996, by former Head of State, General Sani Abacha. Governor Douye Diri paid tribute to Abacha, saying his action freed the Ijaw people from oppression and injustice. The event, tagged "Celebrating Legacies," was attended by dignitaries, including former President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan.
The grand finale of the four-day celebrations attracted a large crowd, including family members of the late Abacha, Alhaji Abba Abacha and Alhaja Fatima Gumsu Abacha, members of the National Assembly, and top government officials. The state honoured 63 distinguished personalities, including the late General Abacha, former President Jonathan, and other notable individuals who contributed to the state's development.
Governor Diri deliberately mentioned General Abacha's name in his remarks, citing the significance of his action to the Ijaw nation. He said Abacha freed the Ijaw people from oppression and gave them a homogeneous state. Diri also noted that the state was celebrating its 30th anniversary and Nigeria's 66th independence anniversary.
The governor highlighted the state's progress, citing the creation of over five universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education, as well as the development of road networks and healthcare infrastructure. He attributed the state's growth to the vision of its founding fathers and the grace of God.
Former President Jonathan, who received an award on behalf of the honourees, dedicated his award to his late boss and political mentor, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha. He commended Governor Diri for organising the anniversary and honouring those who laboured for the creation and development of the state.
The awardees included individuals who facilitated the creation of the state, promoted the Ijaw language, and made significant contributions to sports, education, and public service. Some notable recipients included Olympians Daniel Igali and Blessing Oborududu, former Super Eagles players and coaches, and musicians like Inetimi Odon and Timi Dakolo.
The event was attended by dignitaries, including ambassadors of several countries, and top government officials. Governor Diri's wife, Dr. Gloria Diri, and Deputy Governor, Dr. Peter Akpe, were also in attendance. The Bayelsa State Cultural Troupe was honoured for its contributions to the state's cultural heritage.
