The Bauchi State government has initiated the payment of N10 billion to 1,700 retirees who have been waiting for their benefits for years. The payment is part of the government's effort to clear the backlog of pension arrears owed to retired civil servants. According to Governor Bala Mohammed, the payment is in line with the government's commitment to addressing the pension backlog that has been a challenge for previous administrations.

Governor Mohammed, who was represented by his deputy, Muhammad Auwal Jatau, stated that some retirees have been waiting for over 10 years to receive their benefits after dedicating years of service to the state. He noted that the first batch of payments will cover those who worked in local governments between 2012 and 2013, while payments for state government workers will start from 2013.

The governor expressed regret over the death of some retirees who passed away while waiting for their benefits. He described the situation as an injustice and emphasized the need for a proper system to ensure that retirees receive their benefits promptly. Mohammed also announced the establishment of the Bauchi State Pension Fund to improve the management of pension benefits and ensure transparency and accountability.

A high-powered committee, chaired by former Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Sabiu Baba, has been set up to oversee the verification of retirees' data, ensure the accuracy of information, and disburse funds. The committee has worked hard to develop a process that guarantees that every kobo reaches the rightful owner directly, without bureaucratic bottlenecks.

Governor Mohammed assured other retirees who are not part of the initial batch of beneficiaries that their payments are being processed. He promised that the government will continue to pay outstanding benefits as funds become available, following verification and audit of the state's finances.

The governor directed officials implementing the scheme to ensure that beneficiaries are treated with dignity and fairness. He emphasized that there should be no official interference or favoritism in the process.

The payment of N10 billion to 1,700 retirees is a significant step towards clearing the pension backlog in Bauchi State. The government's effort to address this long-standing issue is expected to bring relief to the affected retirees and their families.
