Babcock University recently commemorated its 67th Founders' Day and 27th anniversary with a free medical outreach programme for residents of Ilishan-Remo. The programme, coordinated by the Babcock University Teaching Hospital (BUTH) medical team, provided essential healthcare services directly to the community.
The medical outreach covered a range of services including specialist consultations, eye examinations with provision of glasses, dental care, blood pressure and blood sugar checks, medications, health education, counselling, and spiritual care. HIV screening, medications, health talks and education, minor and major surgeries were also provided. At least 300 patients attended the programme, expressing gratitude for the life-changing support.
Beneficiaries of the medical outreach programme shared their experiences, with one, Mrs. Oshitola Kujirat, stating that she received malaria medication and pain relief for her leg pain. She expressed her appreciation for the support, noting that she would not have had to pay for the medications otherwise. Other beneficiaries, including Mrs. Bikarat Sokoni and Mrs. Oluwayemi Sisadidi, also testified to the impact of the outreach.
In addition to the medical outreach, the university's Legal Services Department provided free legal consultations to residents on various issues, including landlord and tenancy disputes, divorce proceedings, custody matters, child maintenance, dissolution of marriages, and estate property sharing.
Dr. Joseph Agada, Director of Legal Services, noted that many participants expressed satisfaction with the counsel received. He stated that some cases would be pursued pro bono beyond the outreach, emphasising the university's commitment to justice and community well-being. Dr. Agada highlighted the importance of sustaining the initiative, citing its community impact, especially in helping people to know their rights and act within the ambit of the law.
Babcock University's President/Vice-Chancellor, Professor Afolarin Ojewole, remarked that the Founders' Day celebrations were not only a celebration of heritage but also a reaffirmation of the university's mission to serve humanity. He stated that the outreaches reflected the university's commitment to sustainable impact, ensuring that health, justice, and dignity are accessible to all.
By combining healthcare delivery with access to justice, Babcock University reaffirms its vision of sustaining and building resilient communities, fostering empowerment, and creating lasting impact on its Ilishan community while celebrating its Founders' Day legacy. The university's efforts aim to build bridges of hope and service with its host community and beyond.
