A 19-year-old migrant from South Sudan was arrested in Melbourne on Tuesday after being involved in a wild joy ride that brought the city to a standstill. The teenager, who was released from prison just a month ago, pleaded guilty to stealing a motor vehicle. His lawyer argued that he did not deserve to go to prison again. The suspect comes from a good family that migrated to Australia from South Sudan; his father is a doctor and his mother is an ambassador at the Ugandan Embassy.

The joy ride began on Tuesday morning when a group of teenagers allegedly broke into a family home in Brighton East, stealing a Nissan and an Audi while the residents slept. The group is also accused of breaking into a second home in Hampton Park, where masked thugs kicked in the front door and confronted a resident. The stolen vehicles were then used in a high-speed chase across three freeways, causing long delays for motorists. The alleged crime spree ended with the dramatic arrest of six suspects, including the 19-year-old from South Sudan.

The high-speed chase began when police spotted the Nissan being driven erratically in Doveton. Police engaged in a pursuit, following the vehicle through multiple suburbs on the EastLink and Monash Freeway before finally intercepting it with air support at around noon. The suspects, including three 16-year-old boys, a 17-year-old boy, the 19-year-old, and a 20-year-old man, were arrested at the scene. One of the suspects was left red-faced when his trousers fell down, revealing his underpants, as officers dragged him away.

The suspects have been charged with various offenses, including intentional aggravated exposure of emergency worker to risk by driving, reckless conduct endangering life, reckless conduct endangering serious injury, theft of motor vehicle, unlicensed driving, aggravated burglary, and commit indictable offence while on bail. The 20-year-old Wheelers Hill man remains in hospital under police guard. Melbourne's Monash Freeway was closed for several hours as officers detained the suspects.

The mother of one of the accused suspects claims that police used excessive force during the arrest, leaving her son "severely traumatised". She plans to apply for bail on Friday. The court heard that the suspects' families are well-established in Australian society, with the 19-year-old suspect's parents holding prominent positions.

Victoria Police reported that there were no injuries during the alleged crime spree. The police investigation is ongoing, with further charges possible. The incident has raised concerns about the involvement of young people in crime and the need for community support.

The six suspects are currently facing serious charges and will appear in court in the coming days. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks and consequences of reckless behavior on the roads. Authorities are urging young people to make positive choices and avoid involvement in crime.
