The Ashanti Region of Ghana is expected to experience a significant improvement in its power supply by December 2026. This follows major infrastructure upgrades being undertaken by the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) to strengthen electricity transmission in Greater Kumasi. The upgrades aim to address persistent complaints from residents and businesses over intermittent power outages in the region.
GRIDCo's Chief Executive Officer, Ing. Frank Asirifi Otchere, recently briefed the Ashanti Regional Minister on the ongoing interventions to enhance electricity supply across Greater Kumasi. As part of these measures, GRIDCo is installing a fifth feeder to supplement the four existing feeders that supply power to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). This development is expected to bolster the reliability of electricity supply in the region.
In addition to the installation of a new feeder, GRIDCo is upgrading the Kumasi–Anwomaso transmission line, including the Anwomaso-to-Ridge section. The upgrade seeks to increase the transmission capacity of the line from approximately 360 megawatts to 1,000 megawatts. According to Ing. Otchere, these interventions are critical to meeting the increasing demand for electricity from households and industries in the region.
The project, which commenced in July 2026, is expected to be completed by November 2026. Upon completion, the upgraded transmission line will provide a more reliable electricity supply to the Ashanti Region, which has experienced recurring power outages. The outages have resulted in significant disruptions to businesses and households, prompting calls for the introduction of a load-shedding timetable.
The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition had previously assured residents of Kumasi and other parts of the Ashanti Region of improved electricity supply following the addition of generation capacity associated with the AKSA Energy project at Anwomaso. The Ministry apologized to residents after power outages left parts of the region without electricity in December 2025.
Ing. Otchere emphasized the importance of the ongoing projects, stating that they are critical to improving the reliability of electricity supply in the region. He assured that GRIDCo has prioritized these projects to ensure their completion by December 2026. The assurance comes as a relief to residents and businesses in the Ashanti Region, who have been affected by the persistent power outages.
The latest interventions by GRIDCo are expected to strengthen the transmission network and provide a more reliable electricity supply to the Ashanti Region as demand continues to grow. With the completion of these projects, the region can expect a significant reduction in power outages, providing a boost to businesses and households alike.
