The 19 villages that make up Arochukwu in Abia State observed a moment of stillness on Saturday as family members, friends, associates, and well-wishers gathered to pay their respects to Mrs. Ijeoma Okoro, mother of the Deputy Managing Director of ABC Transport, Mazi Chidi Okoro. Mrs. Okoro, who died at the age of 71, was laid to rest at the family residence in Utughugwu, Arochukwu.
The burial ceremony was attended by an impressive gathering of dignitaries and guests from within and outside Nigeria. Prominent personalities from different walks of life converged on the community to honour the late matriarch and identify with the Okoro family. A large contingent of staff members of ABC Transport turned out in solidarity with their Deputy Managing Director and his family.
The Gaskiya College Class of 1991, whose members came together to honour their former schoolmate and stand by him at a moment of personal loss, was also conspicuously represented. The Royal Boss Club was equally well represented, with members joining other friends and associates to celebrate the life of Mrs. Okoro and support the bereaved family.
The gathering also included community leaders, business associates, relatives, friends, and other dignitaries from different parts of Nigeria and beyond. This underscores the wide network of relationships enjoyed by the Okoro family. Although the occasion was primarily to mourn the passing of Mrs. Okoro, it equally provided an opportunity for family members and friends to celebrate her 71 years of life and the values she imparted to those around her.
Mrs. Okoro was remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt whose death has created a huge vacuum in the lives of her family and loved ones. The family’s choice of the biblical passage from 2 Timothy 4:7, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith”, aptly captured the mood of the occasion.
For the mourners, the passage offered both consolation and a fitting tribute to a woman whose earthly journey had come to an end. From Utughugwu village, where the remains of the deceased were committed to mother earth, the atmosphere across Arochukwu was one of solemn reflection, unity, and celebration of life.
The presence of guests from different parts of the country and abroad added significance to the ceremony, while the strong representation of ABC Transport staff demonstrated the bond of friendship and professional camaraderie existing within the organisation. The gathering of the Gaskiya College Class of ’91 was another emotional highlight of the ceremony, demonstrating the enduring bonds created by years of shared experiences.
