The Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has challenged Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to provide evidence supporting his allegations that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the APC are behind the legal dispute surrounding Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo's candidacy. Kwankwaso alleged that Yusuf and the APC are trying to prevent Gwarzo from contesting the 2027 governorship election.
The APC described Kwankwaso's allegations as baseless, accusing him of attempting to blackmail the party and its governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 election. The party's state chairman, Umar Haruna Doguwa, denied any involvement in the legal proceedings, stating that the case arose from an internal crisis within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to Doguwa, some members of the NDC instituted the case against the party itself, and neither the APC nor the Kano State Government initiated the legal action. He accused Kwankwaso of trying to divert attention from the internal challenges confronting his party by involving the APC and Governor Yusuf in the dispute.
The APC challenged Kwankwaso to present credible evidence to support his allegations, insisting that neither the party nor the governor sponsored, influenced, or facilitated the court action against Gwarzo. The party emphasized that the judiciary is an independent arm of government and urged political actors to allow relevant institutions to discharge their constitutional responsibilities without politicizing internal party disputes.
The APC reaffirmed that all eligible candidates have the constitutional right to participate in the 2027 elections in accordance with the law. The party's statement comes as the 2027 governorship election approaches, with various political parties and candidates preparing for the contest.
Kwankwaso's allegations had sparked controversy in Kano State's political landscape, with many calling for him to provide evidence to support his claims. The development has also raised concerns about the potential impact on the 2027 election and the credibility of the electoral process in Kano State.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has listed 592 candidates to contest 52 seats in Benue State, amid preparations for the 2027 elections. Meanwhile, the APC and other political parties are gearing up for the election, with their leaders making various promises and appeals to voters across the country.
