The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council has strongly criticized Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, for claiming he won the 2023 presidential election. In a statement issued on Friday by its spokesman, Dele Alake, the APC described Obi's claim as a "troubling display of delusion" and a lack of character and dignity. This reaction follows Obi's recent interview on the BBC, where he stated that he won the election despite admitting to lacking evidence.
According to the APC, Obi's claim is particularly annoying given that he simultaneously admitted to lacking evidence to support it. The Council stated that Obi's logic implies that it is acceptable to make outrageous claims without a shred of evidence or verisimilitude. The APC described Obi's habit as deeply troubling, saying there is no end to his posturing, shenanigans, and farce. This criticism comes as Obi continues to insist that he won the election, despite being placed a distant third in the poll.
The APC further criticized Obi for his persistent claims, stating that it reflects a deep and troubling disconnection from reality and an absolute disregard for facts and truth. The Council questioned where Obi is sourcing his facts, suggesting that it may be from unreliable sources. The APC also referenced Obi's supporters, describing them as possibly being "two sides of the same rotten coin" as their leader.
In contrast, the APC restated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu won the 2023 election decisively, with his victory confirmed by the Independent National Electoral Commission and affirmed by the election tribunal and Supreme Court. The Council highlighted that President Tinubu has continued to discharge his mandate, advancing key reforms that have stabilized the economy, expanded infrastructure, supported businesses and youth, upgraded education and healthcare, and created job opportunities.
The APC also renewed its call on Obi to honour his earlier pledge to exit the 2027 presidential race if it is proven that his administration left behind liabilities in Anambra State. According to the Council, state financial records now clearly establish that this is the case. The APC urged Obi to be truthful about his past and to refrain from making unsubstantiated claims about the 2023 election.
Dele Alake, the APC spokesman, emphasized that Obi's claims are unbecoming of a man who aspires to lead Nigeria. Alake stated that Obi's constant habit of exaggerating facts is troubling and that his claims lack credibility. The APC reiterated that President Tinubu's victory is a fact that has been established by various institutions and that Obi's claims are unfounded.
The APC concluded by emphasizing that President Tinubu has made significant progress in his presidency, and that Obi's claims are a distraction from the real issues facing the country. The Council urged Nigerians to focus on the president's achievements and to be wary of unfounded claims by opposition candidates.
