The Anambra State Police Command has issued a warning to residents about the increasing use of motorcycles in facilitating robbery and other crimes. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, the alert follows a series of incidents, including the arrest of a motorcycle rider found with a pistol in Nnewi. This has raised concerns about the potential for motorcycle owners to be unwittingly involved in or targeted by criminals.

The incidents have resulted in tragic consequences, including the death of a motorcycle rider in Aguleri who was attacked and dispossessed of his motorcycle and personal belongings. Preliminary observations suggest that criminal elements are exploiting motorcycles to carry out robbery and other crimes, particularly against unsuspecting members of the public and fellow motorcycle users. The police are urging residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious motorcycle movements or activities.

The Anambra State Police Command has observed that some motorcycle owners do not properly register their motorcycles or keep adequate ownership documentation. This can make it difficult to identify, trace, and recover motorcycles when they are stolen or used in criminal activities. The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has directed Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to intensify sensitization and community engagement with motorcycle riders' associations and other stakeholders.

The police are working to strengthen community-based intelligence, improve motorcycle identification and documentation, and enhance information sharing to prevent criminals from exploiting motorcycles. The Commissioner of Police has urged motorcycle riders' associations, community leaders, and other stakeholders to cooperate with the police by providing credible and timely information that could assist in identifying and disrupting criminal elements.

The Anambra State Police Command is advising all motorcycle owners and riders to ensure that their motorcycles are properly registered and that relevant ownership documents are readily available. Residents are also encouraged to promptly report suspicious motorcycle movements or activities to the nearest police station or through established emergency communication channels.

The police are emphasizing that security is a shared responsibility and calling on residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities rather than confronting suspected criminals themselves. The Commissioner of Police has reiterated the importance of community cooperation in preventing crimes and ensuring public safety.

The Anambra State Police Command is taking a proactive approach to addressing the rising concern of motorcycle-related crimes, and residents are being urged to support the efforts by providing information and reporting suspicious activities. The police are committed to working with the community to prevent crimes and ensure a safer environment for all residents.
