The Anambra State Police Command has issued a warning to residents about a rising trend of robbery and other crimes linked to motorcycles. This alert comes after a series of recent incidents involving motorcycle riders. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the command has observed that criminal elements are using motorcycles to facilitate their movements and commit offenses.
The warning follows the arrest of a motorcycle rider found with a pistol during a stop-and-search operation in Nnewi. Additionally, an incident in Aguleri is under investigation, where a motorcycle rider was attacked, dispossessed of his motorcycle and personal belongings, and later died. These incidents have raised concerns about the use of motorcycles in criminal activities.
Preliminary observations by the police suggest that criminals are exploiting motorcycles to carry out robbery and other offenses against unsuspecting members of the public and fellow motorcycle users. The police have also expressed concern over the failure of some motorcycle owners to properly register their motorcycles or keep adequate ownership documents.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has directed Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to intensify sensitization and community engagement with motorcycle riders' associations, Presidents-General of communities, vigilante groups, and other stakeholders. The goal is to strengthen community-based intelligence, improve motorcycle identification and documentation, and enhance information sharing.
The police have urged motorcycle owners and riders to ensure their motorcycles are properly registered and that relevant ownership documents are readily available. Residents are also advised to promptly report suspicious motorcycle movements, persons, or activities to the nearest police station or through established emergency communication channels.
CP Ama has called on motorcycle riders' associations, community leaders, and other stakeholders to cooperate with the police by providing credible and timely information that could assist in identifying and disrupting criminal elements operating in their communities. The Command emphasizes that security is a shared responsibility and urges residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
The Anambra State Police Command reiterates its commitment to preventing criminals from using motorcycles to commit robbery and other offenses. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the police rather than confronting suspected criminals themselves. The police aim to work closely with the community to address this emerging pattern of crime.
