Prof. Joash Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has acknowledged that the commission faces significant challenges in rebuilding public trust, tackling voter apathy, and combating misinformation and disinformation ahead of the 2027 general election. Speaking at the North-West Zonal Interactive Meeting with staff, Amupitan noted that while INEC performed well in the Osun State off-cycle governorship election, the 2027 polls would be a more substantial test. The election will take place across 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Amupitan highlighted that the success of the Osun State election raised expectations for the nationwide polls. He attributed the success to the convergence of operational discipline, technical competence, and administrative integrity. The INEC chairman praised staff for their dedication, noting that their efforts ensured the integrity of the ballot and that citizens' votes counted. However, he warned that the commission must now prove that the performance in Osun was not an isolated success.
The INEC chairman identified overcoming a lingering trust deficit, confronting widespread voter apathy, and defeating misinformation and disinformation as the commission's greatest battles. He noted that false narratives gain traction when administrative failures provide grounds for public suspicion. Amupitan emphasized that the conduct, competence, and character of INEC staff in the field are crucial in defending against fake news.
Amupitan disclosed that the commission had commenced the procurement and distribution of new operational pick-up vehicles to state and local government offices nationwide. This move aims to boost the mobility, security, and operational efficiency of INEC staff across all terrains. The chairman assured staff that the commission prioritizes their welfare and security.
The INEC chairman also announced that the commission is working on improved welfare and remuneration for its staff. He confirmed that a new salary and welfare package for INEC staff, commission members, and Resident Electoral Commissioners is being implemented. The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission had earlier confirmed ongoing engagement with INEC on improved funding and remuneration.
Amupitan urged staff to recognize that the credibility of the 2027 election would depend not only on technology and logistics but also on their professionalism, neutrality, and conduct before, during, and after the polls. He emphasized that the commission's performance in the 2027 election would be a test of its ability to build on the success of the Osun State election.
