American Airlines has officially resumed flights to Haiti, restoring a vital air link between the United States and the Caribbean nation. The flights commenced on Sunday, November 1, 2026, with daily nonstop service between Miami International Airport and Cap-Haïtien International Airport in Northern Haiti. This development is particularly significant for Haiti's diaspora community in South Florida, providing a direct connection to the country's northern region.

The inaugural flight, AA2492, was operated by a Boeing 737 and featured an entirely Haitian, Creole-speaking crew led by Captain Oliver Jean, who previously served as the country's Director of Civil Aviation. This resumption marks American Airlines' 100th destination in its Caribbean and Latin American network. The airline suspended its Miami–Port-au-Prince flights in November 2024 after a post-flight inspection revealed bullet damage to an aircraft arriving from Haiti.

The security situation in Haiti has continued to affect aviation in the country. Following another shooting incident involving a Spirit Airlines aircraft in November 2025, the United States Federal Aviation Administration imposed restrictions on certain low-altitude operations around Port-au-Prince and parts of central Haiti. These restrictions remain in place, with the current FAA restrictions extending through March 2, 2027.

The resumption of American Airlines' flights to Cap-Haïtien does not mean normal air connectivity has been totally restored across Haiti. Port-au-Prince remains subject to FAA restrictions below 10,000 feet in specified areas. The U.S. State Department continues to classify Haiti as Level 4 – Do Not Travel. Despite this, the resumption is an important development for Haitian families, businesses, and travelers.

The daily Miami–Cap-Haïtien flights provide a vital connection to Northern Haiti and offer onward connections to more than 90 destinations across the United States through Miami. At the moment, Northern Haiti is reconnecting with the United States while the country's capital remains isolated due to security concerns. This has resulted in two different aviation realities within the same country.

Haiti, a country in the Caribbean on the island of Hispaniola, occupies the western side of the island, which it shares with the Dominican Republic. It is the third-largest country in the Caribbean by area and the most populous, with an estimated population of 11.4 million. American Airlines, headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, is a major airline operating in the United States.

American Airlines is the largest airline in the world in terms of passengers carried and daily flights. The resumption of flights to Cap-Haïtien International Airport marks a significant milestone in the airline's Caribbean and Latin American network. The airline's return to Haiti is expected to have a positive impact on the country's aviation sector and economy.
