In recent days, Algerian families, medical professionals, and psychologists have been working to combat drug addiction among teenagers and young adults. As part of this effort, some individuals have turned to herbal remedies in an attempt to overcome their addiction to various types of drugs and psychotropic pills. Some have even advertised their herbal concoctions, claiming they have helped others overcome their addiction and return to a normal life.

These herbal remedies, which include ginger, peppermint, and chamomile, are not significantly different from those used to treat COVID-19 patients during the pandemic. The remedies are prepared by mixing and grinding various herbs, such as peppermint with ginger, or wormwood with cinnamon. Proponents of these remedies claim they can help alleviate addiction, or at least provide a sense of calm and comfort to those struggling with addiction.

Sbih, an herbalist and environmental activist, notes that these herbs have been used for centuries, dating back to the time of Ibn Sina, a renowned physician. He claims that these herbs, particularly wormwood, have been proven to be beneficial and do not cause harm, even if they do not produce the desired results. Sbih emphasizes that these remedies are not a cure for addiction but rather a way to provide comfort and alleviate symptoms.

Dr. Rokia Tebani, a specialist in laser-based addiction treatment, acknowledges that herbal remedies can be helpful in providing relief and comfort to those struggling with addiction. However, she notes that these remedies alone are not sufficient to overcome addiction and that a comprehensive treatment plan is necessary.

In addition to herbal remedies, some sports coaches are encouraging young people to engage in physical activity, such as group sports, hiking, and jogging in nature, as a way to overcome addiction. Hamza Aissani, a sports coach, reports that many individuals struggling with addiction have contacted him and begun exercising regularly, with some even overcoming their addiction through a combination of physical activity and herbal remedies.

This shift towards seeking help for addiction is part of a broader effort in Algeria to combat the problem. The government has implemented punitive measures against drug dealers and traffickers, and the community has come together to raise awareness and provide support to those struggling with addiction. As a result, some individuals who were previously hesitant to seek help have begun to come forward and share their struggles with addiction.

The growing trend of seeking help for addiction is seen as a positive development in the fight against drug abuse in Algeria. While there is still much work to be done, the willingness of individuals to seek help and the availability of alternative approaches, such as herbal remedies and sports, offer hope for those struggling with addiction and their families.
