Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has ordered a general increase in salaries for Civil Protection personnel. This decision was made during a Council of Ministers meeting held on Sunday, September 20, 2026. The president also requested a revision of the special status of this corps, with a better valuation of the missions carried out on the ground. This move comes after the strong mobilization of Civil Protection elements during recent fires, particularly in the most affected wilayas.
The president renewed his thanks to the agents of this corps for their dedication to their missions, highlighting the risks they are now exposed to in their interventions. The revision of the special status will cover several aspects, including the revision of the grade grid to better take into account the specialties of the corps and the nature of the missions entrusted to administrative and operational personnel. The president also requested a valorization of the allowances granted to agents intervening on the ground and their families.
President Tebboune emphasized the importance of continuous training for Civil Protection agents, ordering that it be provided throughout their careers to maintain a high level of operational effectiveness and preparation. He also called for the modernization of intervention means, requesting a technical and technological revision of the equipment used on the ground, with the acquisition of more efficient materials and the establishment of a renewal plan. The creation of surveillance points and semi-centers in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture is also planned, particularly in areas with high forest density.
The aerial device for fighting fires will be gradually reinforced, depending on the availability of water bomber aircraft on the international market. President Tebboune also ordered the institutionalization of seasonal volunteering within the Civil Protection, with a specific system to ensure the protection of volunteers. The Council of Ministers also reviewed the progress of the compensation of victims of recent fires. The president praised the speed of compensation operations, particularly in the wilaya of Jijel, the most affected.
President Tebboune thanked the members of the government, particularly those directly responsible for this operation, and ordered the completion of any remaining compensation operations as soon as possible. He also reiterated his wish that the solidarity of the people and the action of the public authorities have made it possible to alleviate the consequences of the tragedy that has affected several wilayas. The minister of Labor, Mohamed Hattab, had recalled on Saturday in Jijel that the support of the victims is not limited to the immediate response to the fires.
The support will continue through social protection services, health coverage, and services provided by his sector. On another matter, President Tebboune decided to maintain the cost of the Hajj at 82 million centimes per Algerian pilgrim, following a proposal from the Minister of Religious Affairs and Wakfs. This decision is part of the continuity of the support provided by the State to the Algerian pilgrims. The digitization of the administration was also on the agenda, with the president ordering the preparation of a presidential decree on the secure digital connection of the different bodies and institutions of the State.
The president also requested that this connection include the wilayas to allow a more fluid remittance of local data, while guaranteeing a maximum level of protection for citizens' data. The Council of Ministers examined the results of the 2025-2026 harvest and threshing campaign, with the president ordering the preparation of a monthly publication and charging the walis with ensuring precise monitoring of production levels and volumes of different cereals. The system of payment of agricultural harvests by the regional agencies of the Algerian Interprofessional Office of Cereals will be immediately digitized.
