Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune chaired a Council of Ministers meeting on September 20, discussing various key issues, including the status and compensation system of Civil Protection personnel. President Tebboune has instructed the government to finalize the compensation dossiers for victims of recent fires, particularly in Jijel, which was severely affected. He expressed hope that the government's solidarity efforts had alleviated the suffering of citizens affected by the tragedy. The President also highlighted the need to revise the Civil Protection agents' status, taking into account the changing climate and the risks they face. This revision aims to improve their working conditions and provide better compensation.
As part of the measures to enhance the Civil Protection services, President Tebboune has decided to increase the salaries of its agents through a revision of remuneration indices. The salary grid will be aligned with the specialization of the corps and the classification of administrative and field personnel. Additionally, the President has approved an increase in allowances for field personnel and their families. These changes aim to boost the morale and effectiveness of Civil Protection agents.
The President has also taken steps to strengthen the training of firefighters throughout their careers, ensuring they maintain a high level of efficiency. He ordered a technical and technological review of equipment and field resources, including the acquisition of advanced materials and the development of a renewal plan. Furthermore, the President instructed the implementation of surveillance points in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture in densely wooded areas.
To enhance the country's response to natural disasters, President Tebboune announced plans to reinforce the fleet of water-bombing aircraft, subject to international market availability. He also proposed integrating seasonal volunteers into the Civil Protection services, with a system to protect these volunteers. These measures aim to improve the country's preparedness and response to emergencies.
Regarding the agricultural campaign for 2025-2026, President Tebboune has tasked the Minister of Agriculture, Sid Ali Khaldi, with establishing a monthly bulletin to monitor production rates and quantities of various cereals. The President also ordered the immediate digitalization of the payment system for agricultural harvests for regional agencies of the Algerian Office of Cereals (OAIC). He emphasized the need to review the role of the OAIC and specialized agricultural institutes to improve their performance and modernize them.
President Tebboune has also emphasized the importance of combating corruption in the agricultural sector and developing a more effective agricultural orientation law. He proposed a national program to analyze soils, in coordination with laboratories, to identify and classify the nature of agricultural lands. The President also encouraged the use of treated wastewater for irrigation, aiming to reduce dependence on rainfall and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
