Algerian Minister of Mujahideen Tayeb Zitouni recently visited Tizi-Ouzou, where he addressed the progress of talks between Algeria and France on key issues, including the return of national archives and the repatriation of the remains of Algerian martyrs. During a press conference at the house of Krim Belkacem, a hero of the Algerian revolution, Zitouni stated that discussions between the two countries are ongoing on four main dossiers.
The four dossiers include the return of Algerian national archives currently held in France, compensation for victims of nuclear testing in the south, the fate of disappeared persons, and the repatriation of the remains of Algerian martyrs. According to Zitouni, progress has been made on two of these dossiers, specifically the recovery of archives and the remains of martyrs.
Zitouni revealed that a mixed commission has been working on these issues, with Algerian experts traveling to France twice to identify the remains. So far, 31 remains have been identified. The minister described the process as moving "slowly but surely," acknowledging the sensitivity and complexity of the issues, as well as the time elapsed since the remains were buried.
Regarding the archives, Zitouni mentioned that France holds approximately 475 km of Algerian archives. The two countries have agreed to first retrieve copies of these archives, with the goal of eventually recovering the original documents. The minister emphasized that this operation is complicated and sensitive, requiring time and expertise.
Zitouni also addressed the issue of recognition for Mujahideen, stating that this falls under the purview of the National Office for the Mujahideen (ONM). He noted that the recognition process was completed in 2002 but has had extensions. The commission responsible for recognition was dissolved, and suspended dossiers were reevaluated through new investigations.
During his visit, Zitouni promised to provide financial support for the rehabilitation of Krim Belkacem's birthplace and its annexation to the Tizi-Ouzou Moudjahid museum. He also received a request from the family of Abane Ramdane to name the new Tizi-Ouzou stadium after the late revolutionary figure.
The minister participated in a ceremony organized by the "Kabylie Sport and Culture" association, where several revolutionary and sports personalities were honored. The event was attended by Mustapha Berraf, president of the Algerian Olympic Committee.
