The Algerian minister reiterated his country's support for the African common position, stressing the need for permanent and equitable African representation on the Security Council with full prerogatives. Restoring trust in the international order requires respecting and applying international law universally, Minister Attaf insisted. He cautioned against the risks of declining multilateralism and the resurgence of the logic of force and selectivity in applying international rules. On the Palestinian issue, Minister Attaf reaffirmed Algeria's total and unconditional support for the legitimate and inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, particularly their right to establish an independent and fully sovereign state with Jerusalem as its capital. This stance aligns with Algeria's long-standing commitment to the Palestinian cause and its support for a two-state solution.
Regarding the Western Sahara conflict, Minister Attaf welcomed the organization of direct negotiations between Morocco and the Polisario Front at the beginning of the year under UN auspices and with US support. He reaffirmed Algeria's principled position in favor of the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination. Algeria's approach emphasizes the need for a peaceful and negotiated solution to the conflict.
For the Sahel-Saharan region, Minister Attaf advocated for an approach focusing on supporting regional security, accompanying development efforts, promoting reconciliation and dialogue, and addressing instability drivers. This approach respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states and the choices of their peoples.
