On September 30, combined detachments of the Algerian People's National Army (ANP) intercepted a convoy of five men transporting a large quantity of cocaine through the military sector of Tamanrasset, in the 6th Military Region. The operation, which was based on prior intelligence, resulted in the recovery of over 80 kilograms of cocaine, distributed across three utility vehicles. One of the men was killed, while the other four surrendered.

The intercepted convoy was found to be heavily armed, with a FMPK machine gun, a Kalashnikov submachine gun, and a significant stock of ammunition seized. Additionally, four mobile phones were recovered, which will be used by investigators to track down the network's connections. This type of arsenal is not unusual in the region, as evidenced by a similar interception in June, where a cache of war weapons, including RPG-7 launchers and DUSHKA machine guns, was seized in In Guezzam.

The cocaine was hidden on board three utility vehicles, a mode of transport commonly used by traffickers who rely on the vastness of the Saharan tracks to evade controls. The quantity seized far exceeds that of a small-time trafficking operation, suggesting a large-scale and organized network. The traffickers are believed to use corridors that originate in the Sahel region, with Algeria serving as a transit or destination country.

This seizure is part of a larger trend of increasing narcotics trafficking in Algeria. In August, a transnational network was dismantled in the capital, with over a million psychotropic pills and 86 kg of cocaine seized. Earlier, in Oran, a record seizure of 228 kilograms of cocaine led to a sprawling investigation and the arrest of 20 individuals. These operations demonstrate the growing concern over narcotics trafficking in the region.

The Algerian Ministry of National Defense (MDN) views this operation as a validation of its approach to combating organized crime. The MDN emphasizes the continued vigilance of its units deployed along the southern border, where surveillance requires significant human and technological resources. The authorities see this as a signal to criminal organizations attempting to sell their substances on the national market.

The strategic location of Tamanrasset makes it a critical point in the fight against narcotics trafficking. The wilaya borders vast and difficult-to-access Saharan areas, traversed by ancient routes that are being reused by criminal groups. The ANP has established a permanent device in the region, combining ground patrols, aerial surveillance, and intelligence gathering to counter these threats.

The investigation into this operation is expected to focus on identifying the masterminds behind the trafficking network. The seized mobile phones and statements from the four arrested individuals will be used to map the network and locate its connections upstream and downstream. This operation demonstrates the Algerian military's commitment to disrupting narcotics trafficking networks and protecting the country's territory.
