The Algerian labor union, UGTA, has outlined its priorities in addressing workers' concerns. Secretary General Amar Takdjout stated that the union's main goals include expanding salary increases to the private sector, protecting contract workers, and revising certain legislative provisions governing labor relations. The union also aims to improve the handling of workplace harassment and address issues of purchasing power, speculation, and dialogue with employer organizations.
Takdjout emphasized the need to better control inflation and speculative practices. He noted that salary increases implemented in recent years must be accompanied by measures to preserve the purchasing power of households. The increases have been applied differently across sectors and companies, with some able to make significant efforts in favor of their employees, while others face more difficulties.
The UGTA secretary general proposed organizing meetings or conferences on inflation and speculation, involving union, political, and associative organizations, as well as economic actors. He believes that organizations that do not produce ideas or make proposals are "dead." Takdjout called for more spaces for reflection and consultation to address these issues.
Strengthening dialogue between the UGTA and employer organizations is another key aspect of Takdjout's intervention. He expressed support for resuming meetings between social partners to examine company difficulties, anticipate tensions, and seek concerted solutions. The UGTA will continue to pursue salary increases and the revaluation of the guaranteed national minimum wage.
Takdjout highlighted the need to protect contract workers, who often remain under contract for extended periods, sometimes 10, 15, or even 30 years, while occupying permanent positions. He also stressed the importance of better organizing commercial activities, particularly in the distribution of agricultural products, and identifying traders and economic operators.
On the legislative front, Takdjout mentioned that the UGTA has prepared amendment proposals for two texts promulgated in 2023, related to the exercise of union rights and the prevention and resolution of collective labor conflicts, as well as the right to strike. The union aims to improve working conditions and protect workers' rights.
The UGTA's priorities reflect the concerns of Algerian workers, who face challenges related to purchasing power, job security, and working conditions. The union's efforts to address these issues through dialogue and proposals aim to improve the lives of workers and promote social stability in Algeria.
