Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, has begun his activities in New York on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly. He met with Arab League Secretary-General Nabil El-Fahm, discussing key issues on the Arab League's agenda, including developments in the Arab region and the Middle East, particularly in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Attaf and El-Fahm also explored ways to enhance support for the Palestinian cause within the UN framework. They emphasized the role Algeria plays in reforming and developing the Arab League's mechanisms to address challenges facing the Arab nation more effectively. Additionally, Attaf held talks with Libyan Foreign Minister Taher Salem Al-Baour, focusing on the latest developments in Libya and efforts to advance the political process.
The discussions between Attaf and Al-Baour aimed to pave the way for restoring security and stability in Libya. Attaf reiterated Algeria's unwavering support for Libya's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive political settlement to the Libyan crisis. Both parties agreed on the importance of intensifying consultations and coordination to address challenges in the Sahel-Saharan region.
Attaf also met with Ugandan Foreign Minister Adonia Ayibari, exploring avenues for enhancing bilateral cooperation in various fields. They discussed development issues, emphasizing the importance of promoting international cooperation to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, particularly for African countries. The meeting also touched on preparations for the Non-Aligned Movement Ministerial Summit in Kampala.
Furthermore, Attaf held talks with Sierra Leonean Foreign Minister Mohamed Rahman Swaray, exchanging views on the state of bilateral relations and prospects for elevating them. They discussed coordination between their countries during their non-permanent memberships on the UN Security Council. Attaf also congratulated Swaray on Sierra Leone's contribution to the African Union's reform efforts.
On the humanitarian front, Attaf met with Carl Skau, Acting Executive Director of the World Food Programme, to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation between Algeria and the WFP. They addressed the need to address humanitarian needs and support vulnerable populations, particularly in Africa and the Middle East. The meeting also focused on challenges faced by the WFP in Gaza and efforts to ensure an effective response to humanitarian needs.
Attaf concluded his series of meetings by receiving Miriam Spoeriac Egger, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross. They explored ways to deepen cooperation in areas related to promoting respect for international humanitarian law. The meeting also touched on the challenges posed by new technologies and the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence, as well as issues related to the application of international humanitarian law in naval warfare.
