The meeting with Rahman also highlighted the importance of cooperation between the UN and regional organizations, such as the African Union, to promote international cooperation and accelerate the implementation of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Algeria's Ambassador to the UN, Amar Benjama, currently presides over the UN Economic and Social Council. The two parties emphasized the need for a more effective and efficient multilateral system.
Ahmed Attaf also met with African Union Commission Chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Yousuf, on the sidelines of the high-level week of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. The two parties reviewed the current situation in Africa, particularly in the Sahel region, Libya, Western Sahara, Sudan, and South Sudan. They emphasized the need for African solutions to African problems.
During the meeting with Yousuf, the two parties also discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between the African Union and regional organizations to promote peace, security, and development in Africa. The Chairperson of the African Union Commission praised Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's leadership and initiatives to promote peace and stability in the Sahel region.
The Algerian minister emphasized the need to address the root causes of crises in Africa and reject external interference in African affairs. The two parties agreed on the importance of activating African Union mechanisms to promote African solutions to African problems, particularly in the face of growing threats such as terrorism and trans-border crime. Algeria's commitment to promoting African unity and cooperation was reaffirmed.
