The Algerian Gendarmerie has initiated a nationwide awareness campaign to address the risks associated with overloaded heavy vehicles on Algerian roads. As part of this effort, the gendarmerie has announced strict penalties for drivers found exceeding authorized load limits. Overloads of less than 10% will incur a fine of 7,000 Algerian dinars (DA), while overloads between 10% and 20% of the authorized weight will result in an 8,000 DA fine.

The fines increase significantly for more substantial overloads. For overloads between 20% and 30% of the legal weight, the fine is 9,000 DA. However, overloads exceeding 30% of the authorized weight are considered a criminal offense, punishable by fines ranging from 70,000 to 100,000 DA. The gendarmerie has reported instances of overloads surpassing 80% of the legal weight, highlighting the gravity of the issue.

According to the Gendarmerie, overloaded vehicles are more difficult to control and pose a significantly increased risk of road accidents. The authorities stress that adhering to legal load limits is a preventive measure that protects lives and ensures everyone's safety on the roads. To effectively monitor and enforce these regulations, the gendarmerie has been equipped with mobile weighing stations.

These mobile weighing stations were introduced following a convention signed in July with the Ministry of Public Works. The agreement aims to safeguard road infrastructure and reduce traffic accidents. The Minister of Public Works, Abdelkader Djellaoui, emphasized that overloads are a primary cause of road degradation, reducing the lifespan of roads, bridges, and other infrastructure, and contributing to accidents that result in human and material losses.

The awareness campaign and introduction of mobile weighing stations are part of a broader effort to address the issue of overloaded heavy vehicles in Algeria. By enforcing strict penalties and enhancing monitoring capabilities, the authorities aim to mitigate the risks associated with overloaded vehicles and promote safer road conditions.

Farouk Djouadi reported on the initiative, highlighting the gendarmerie's efforts to address this critical road safety issue. The campaign and new enforcement measures are designed to protect both the infrastructure and the lives of road users.

The Algerian government's proactive approach to managing the risks associated with overloaded heavy vehicles underscores its commitment to improving road safety and infrastructure protection. Through continued enforcement and public awareness efforts, the authorities aim to reduce the incidence of overloaded vehicles and enhance overall road safety in Algeria.
