Algeria's Minister of State and Minister of Energy, Mohamed Arkab, has reaffirmed the country's commitment to developing the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline project. Speaking at the 14th edition of the "Nabak 2026" energy and hydrogen conference in Oran, Arkab emphasized the crucial role of natural gas in Algeria's energy mix. He noted that natural gas will continue to play a vital role in meeting the country's growing energy demands while supporting industrial development.

According to Arkab, international forecasts indicate that the world will continue to rely on oil and gas in the coming decades, highlighting the need for sustained investment in the energy sector. He stressed the importance of adopting a balanced approach to energy production, one that leverages various energy sources, including natural gas, while promoting clean technologies and reducing carbon emissions.

The Algerian government, through state-owned energy company Sonatrach, aims to eliminate routine gas flaring by 2030 and reduce methane emissions to near zero levels. Arkab highlighted Algeria's commitment to improving energy efficiency and measuring climate performance. The country's energy strategy focuses on maximizing the value of its natural resources while minimizing environmental impact.

The Trans-Saharan gas pipeline project is a key component of Algeria's vision to establish itself as a regional energy hub, connecting African energy resources to Mediterranean and European markets. The project is expected to have significant economic and social benefits for the countries involved, contributing to regional development and growth.

According to Arkab, technical and economic studies on the project have made significant progress, with work on the Algerian section of the pipeline already underway. He emphasized that Algeria's approach to the project is guided by a commitment to realism, coordination, and responsibility, taking into account the technical, commercial, security, and financial requirements of the project.

The partnership between Algeria and the United States in the energy sector presents a strategic opportunity for cooperation, according to Warren Murdock, President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Algeria. Murdock noted that Algeria's energy potential, geographic location, and commitment to sector development make it an attractive destination for American investors.

Murdock highlighted Algeria's importance as a major gas producer and supplier to the European market, as well as its potential for growth in the energy sector. He emphasized that the relationship between American companies and Sonatrach spans several decades, with opportunities for further collaboration and investment in the country's energy industry.
