The Osun State Amotekun Corps has arrested 30 individuals for allegedly disposing of waste indiscriminately on roads and in drainage channels across Osogbo and its environs. This enforcement operation was carried out in collaboration with environmental sanitation authorities to curb the persistent practice of dumping refuse in unauthorized locations. The arrests were made during a recent operation aimed at enforcing the state's environmental sanitation regulations.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the Osun Amotekun Corps, CSA Yusuf Idowu Abass, the operation was part of efforts to enforce the state's environmental sanitation regulations. The regulations aim to prevent indiscriminate disposal of refuse on roads and in drainage channels, which can obstruct the free flow of rainwater and contribute to flooding and other environmental hazards. The operation followed the recent constitution of an Environmental Sanitation Task Force by the Osun State Government.

The state government had warned residents against dumping refuse indiscriminately, particularly on roads and in drainage channels, and directed them to comply with established waste disposal arrangements. Residents were urged to use the waste collection arrangements provided by the state government, with refuse trucks assigned to collect household waste from residents. The government emphasized that maintaining a clean and healthy environment is a collective responsibility.

The arrested persons were handed over to environmental sanitation officers for further investigation and appropriate action in line with the relevant environmental laws and regulations of the state. The Corps Commander, Osun Amotekun Corps, Adekunle Isaac Omoyele, said the enforcement was necessary to curb the persistent practice of dumping refuse on roads and in drainage channels. He stressed that indiscriminate waste disposal becomes particularly dangerous during the rainy season.

Omoyele explained that the operation was not intended to inconvenience law-abiding residents but to ensure compliance with the state government's environmental sanitation directives. He encouraged members of the public to properly package their waste and hand it over to designated waste collectors rather than disposing of it in unauthorized locations. The Corps Commander urged residents across Osun State to cooperate with the government and desist from dumping refuse on roads, streets, and drainage channels.

The Amotekun Corps will continue to support environmental sanitation officials in enforcing the government's directives and ensuring that individuals who violate the regulations are brought to the attention of the appropriate authorities. Omoyele stressed that maintaining a clean and healthy environment requires the cooperation of government agencies, residents, business owners, and other stakeholders. The government is working to prevent environmental hazards and promote a healthy living environment.

The enforcement operation is part of a broader effort to address environmental challenges in Osun State. The government has taken steps to address the issue of indiscriminate waste disposal, including the constitution of an Environmental Sanitation Task Force and the provision of waste collection arrangements. The cooperation of residents and other stakeholders is crucial in achieving a clean and healthy environment.
