The 14th African and Mediterranean Energy and Hydrogen Conference and Exhibition (NAPEC-2026) is underway in Oran, Algeria. The event brings together industry leaders and experts to discuss the future of energy production and security of supply. A key theme of the conference is the shift from a transition to an addition approach in the energy sector. This approach prioritizes a balanced energy mix, incorporating both traditional hydrocarbons and renewable energy sources.
Algerian Minister of State for Hydrocarbons, Mohamed Arkab, addressed the conference, highlighting the need for a pragmatic strategy that balances energy security with climate imperatives. He emphasized that hydrocarbons will continue to play a significant role in the global energy landscape for decades to come. As such, investments in this sector must continue in parallel with the development of clean energy sources and low-carbon technologies.
On the sidelines of the conference, Minister Arkab held bilateral meetings with representatives from several major international energy companies. These meetings aimed to strengthen cooperation and explore new partnership opportunities in the hydrocarbons sector. Discussions focused on enhancing existing collaborations and identifying new areas for investment and growth.
One of the key meetings was with Kanitta Sartwatayu, CEO of Thai state-owned oil and gas company PTTEP. The two parties reviewed the current state of cooperation in the development of the Hassi Bir Rekaiz field in the Berkine basin. They also explored opportunities to expand their partnership into new projects, particularly in exploration and production.
Minister Arkab also met with Mahmoud Al-Hashmi, CEO of Omani energy company OQ. The two discussed potential areas for cooperation between Sonatrach and OQ, including exploration and production, petrochemicals, and the development of liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects. The exchange of expertise and technology was also on the agenda.
Further meetings took place with representatives from Occidental Petroleum (Oxy), Petrogas, and the UK's Clarke Energy. These discussions centered on strengthening partnerships, investing in new projects, and transferring modern technologies and expertise. The aim is to maximize the value of Algeria's natural resources while promoting sustainable development in the energy sector.
The NAPEC conference highlights Algeria's significant role in regional energy security and its strategic position as a bridge between Africa and Europe. The event provides a platform for industry leaders to share knowledge, explore new opportunities, and forge partnerships that can drive growth and innovation in the energy sector.
