The 2026 school year in Algeria's Khenchela province has begun with the introduction of new educational infrastructure and an increased student enrollment. A total of 132,006 students have joined schools across the province, distributed among 4,303 educational groups. This includes 65,578 students in primary school, 45,262 in middle school, and 21,166 in high school. The new facilities aim to alleviate overcrowding and enhance learning conditions for students.
The educational sector in Khenchela has been bolstered by the addition of several new institutions. These include nine primary schools, three middle schools, one high school, 13 expansion sections, and four school canteens. One of the notable additions is a compensatory high school in the Bounamaraj Jamei area of Ain Jarbou, Babar municipality, with a capacity for 800 pedagogical seats and a school canteen that can provide 200 meals.
Authorities have made significant efforts to ensure a successful start to the school year. Measures include guaranteeing the complete readiness of educational institutions, pedagogical support, and the provision of various services such as transportation, school meals, and healthcare. The sector also benefits from 7,770 teachers, including 581 new recruits, 4,666 administrative staff, and 2,379 workers.
To support students, especially those in need, the authorities have distributed over 666,000 books across educational institutions and the provincial exhibition. This includes 404,464 books for primary school, 187,002 for middle school, and 74,989 for high school. Additionally, 94 sales points, including private bookstores and points of sale within educational institutions, have been set up.
The province has also seen a significant increase in enrollment in the preparatory sections, with 9,450 new students expected to join. Furthermore, 31,375 students across various educational stages will benefit from a financial grant of 5,000 Algerian dinars, in addition to receiving free school books.
In conjunction with the new school year, local authorities have launched initiatives to ensure road safety and awareness. A security plan has been put in place, involving police presence around educational institutions, traffic regulation, and awareness campaigns targeting students and their families.
The local administration has also focused on providing support for underprivileged students, with 22,790 school bags distributed to assist those in need. Moreover, new schools and educational facilities are set to be opened in the coming months of October and November across various municipalities, further enhancing the educational infrastructure in Khenchela.
