The public works department of Annaba province has launched maintenance work on the Cheaiba tunnel, a vital route that connects to the central university and several municipalities. This is not the first maintenance project in Annaba province. Last year, the department carried out similar work on the 8 Mars tunnel, which leads to the city entrance, and the Bouali Said tunnel, which connects to the city center. These tunnels were in a state of disrepair due to water accumulation and deterioration of the asphalt layer.
In addition to tunnel maintenance, the public works department is working on constructing elevated walkways for pedestrians along national roads. This project aims to improve road safety, particularly in areas with high traffic volume and accident-prone zones. Several elevated walkways have already been completed and put into service.
Two elevated walkways were recently opened on national road 44, which has a history of fatal accidents. The walkways are located near the Viva Mall and connect the Boukhoudra 3 neighborhood to the Rima neighborhood. These structures will facilitate pedestrian movement and reduce the risk of accidents.
The public works department has identified several areas that require elevated walkways, particularly near schools and residential areas. The goal is to reduce the number of accidents caused by pedestrians crossing national roads. According to statistics, over 10 people die each year due to reckless crossing of highways.
