Algeria is set to welcome over 12 million students to schools tomorrow as the country prepares for the new academic year. The development comes under the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who during a recent Council of Ministers meeting, emphasized the need for optimal exploitation of gains made in the education sector. This aims to ensure a successful and distinguished academic year.
President Tebboune instructed National Education Minister Mohamed Small Saadawi to utilize these gains within a managed and studied framework. This framework seeks to achieve quality and improve performance while investing in the human resources available in the sector, which have accumulated significant experience since independence. The Ministry of Housing, Urban Planning, and City Planning has handed over 289 new educational facilities. These include 151 primary schools, 90 middle schools, and 48 high schools.
Preparations also involved educational institutions damaged by fires recorded in several eastern and central provinces. National Education Minister Saadawi, during a visit to Jijel province, confirmed that these institutions would be ready to receive students with the start of the academic year. The new academic year will also introduce pedagogical developments, including special arrangements to accompany students with autism. This initiative is a collaboration between the Ministries of National Education and National Solidarity.
The Ministry of National Education has taken measures to ensure the availability of textbooks at educational institutions and sales points. Over 80 million books have been provided across different regions of the country. The new academic year will also see an enhancement in human resources, with teachers who succeeded in the job competition based on certificates organized by the Ministry of National Education joining the workforce.
The education sector, in coordination with the Ministry of Health, is organizing the second edition of the National School Health Week. This event, under the slogan "School Health... For a Safe and Healthy Future," aims to promote health awareness among students. The edition has dedicated different topics according to educational stages.
For primary school students, the topic is "The Relationship Between Trees and Human Health." Middle school students will discuss "The Impact of Forest Damage on Public Health," while high school students will explore "Protecting the Forest Environment as a Health Necessity." These topics reflect the importance of environmental conservation for public health.
With these comprehensive preparations, Algeria is poised to kick off the 2026-2027 academic year successfully. The government's focus on education quality, infrastructure, and health underscores its commitment to providing students with a conducive learning environment.
