On Monday, approximately 12 million students across Algeria will begin the new academic year 2026-2027 in various educational institutions. This includes primary, middle, and high schools. The start of the academic year comes under the guidance of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who recently emphasized the importance of optimizing the benefits and advantages gained in the education sector.
President Tebboune instructed National Education Minister Mohamed Séghir Saïd to ensure a successful and distinguished academic year. The minister has been tasked with utilizing the sector's significant human resources, gained since independence, effectively. In preparation for the new academic year, the Ministry of Housing, Urban Planning, and City Planning has handed over 289 educational facilities. These include 151 primary schools, 90 middle schools, and 48 high schools.
The National Education Ministry has taken measures to address the impact of recent fires in eastern and central Algeria on educational institutions. Minister Saïd reassured that affected institutions would be ready for the start of the academic year. During a visit to Jijel province, he confirmed that these institutions would be prepared to welcome students.
The new academic year will introduce several pedagogical changes. One significant development is the introduction of special arrangements for students with autism. This initiative is a collaboration between the Ministries of National Education and National Solidarity, aiming to ensure the effective integration and education of these students.
To support the new academic year, over 80 million textbooks have been made available nationwide. The education sector has also been bolstered by the recruitment of teachers who succeeded in a competitive exam based on qualifications. This is expected to enhance the quality of education.
The Ministry of National Education, in coordination with the Ministry of Health, will organize the second edition of the National School Health Week. The event, themed "School Health... for a Safe and Healthy Future," will focus on different topics according to educational stages. These topics include the relationship between trees and human health for primary students.
The National School Health Week aims to promote health awareness among students. For middle school students, the topic will be the impact of forest damage on public health, while high school students will focus on the necessity of protecting the forest environment for health reasons. The event seeks to instill a culture of health and environmental responsibility among Algerian students.
