The 18th edition of the International Comic Book Festival of Algiers (FIBDA) took place from October 1 to 5, with the theme "The Graphic Novel, Crossroads of Drawing and Word." The festival, organized by the Ministry of Culture and Arts, brought together creators from 13 countries. American artist Alitha Martinez, known for her work on iconic comic book characters such as Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man, represented the United States at the festival. This was Martinez's eighth visit to Algeria.

Martinez was joined by fellow American, Michael Polson, an illustrator and editor. The duo was accompanied by Jason R. Moore, an actor known for his role as Curtis Hoyle in the Marvel series The Punisher. The presence of American artists at the festival has become a regular occurrence, with the US embassy maintaining a stand at the event since 2018. The chargé d'affaires, Mark A. Schapiro, attended the festival to greet the artists and engage with the public.

The US stand at the festival offered quizzes, animations, and small gifts, catering to visitors of all ages. The aim of the festival was not only to showcase comic book art but also to promote learning and cultural exchange. The American artists emphasized that visual storytelling stimulates imagination and encourages reading. They also highlighted the potential of comic books to make learning English more engaging and fun.

The festival is part of a broader cultural strategy to engage with Algerian youth. In May, the US inaugurated a large cultural space at the Frères Mentouri University, which included an American Corner. Similar centers have been established in several provinces, including Oran and Ouargla. The growth of creative industries has become a significant aspect of US discourse in Algeria.

The participation of American artists in the FIBDA is part of a series of bilateral initiatives. In May, a delegation of US experts worked on preserving Algerian cultural heritage and combating antiquities trafficking. This followed a renewed memorandum in 2024. The collaboration between the two countries aims to promote cultural exchange and understanding.

Algerian Culture Minister Malika Bendouda expressed her satisfaction with the festival's success. She highlighted the recognition the event has received from UNESCO, which has added the festival to its Policy Monitoring Platform. Bendouda views the festival as a celebration of the human spirit, which draws inspiration from various artistic disciplines.

The festival also paid tribute to several historical figures of Algerian comic book art during the opening ceremony. The event showcased the work of local and international artists, demonstrating the growing popularity of comic books and graphic novels in Algeria. The FIBDA has become a significant event in the country's cultural calendar, attracting visitors and creators from around the world.
