The Algerian tourism sector has shown improvement, according to the TTDI 2026, a report released by the World Economic Forum in collaboration with Zurich Insurance Group. Algeria now occupies the 89th position out of 110 countries assessed in the index. This represents a four-place increase compared to 2024. With a score of 3.52 points out of 7, Algeria ranks ninth among 23 African countries included in this edition of the index.
Algeria trails behind several African nations in the ranking, including Mauritius, South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Tanzania, Kenya, Tunisia, and Botswana. However, the country's performance indicates progress since 2019, a reference year prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Algeria has gained five places and increased its score by 6.1% since 2019. This improvement is among the most significant in Africa.
The TTDI evaluates the conditions that enable the travel and tourism sector to develop, rather than directly ranking countries by tourist arrivals, revenue, or visitor spending. The index is based on 102 indicators grouped into 17 pillars and five main dimensions. These dimensions include the economic and security environment, tourism policies, infrastructure and services, tourism resources, and aspects related to sustainable development.
Several African countries have seen notable changes in their rankings. Morocco advanced by seven places, while Nigeria gained three. Conversely, Botswana lost nine places, Namibia dropped seven, and Tunisia fell four positions. Out of the 23 African countries studied, ten declined, eight improved, and five maintained their positions. Mauritius leads in Africa, ranking 59th globally with a score of 4.07 points.
The TTDI 2026 global top five consists of Japan, the United States, Spain, Australia, and France. Germany, the United Kingdom, China, Switzerland, and Italy complete the top ten. According to the WEF, 101 of the 110 countries studied improved their scores between 2024 and 2026, with the global average increasing by 2.1% during this period.
In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, Algeria lags behind major tourist destinations covered by the index. Egypt ranks 63rd globally, Morocco 70th, and Tunisia 82nd, compared to Algeria's 89th position. The index uses data from international organizations, including UN Tourism and the World Bank, as well as a survey conducted by the World Economic Forum.
Key factors contributing to the TTDI scores include air connectivity, visa requirements, price competitiveness, public spending on tourism, digital payments, health indicators, and the presence of UNESCO World Heritage sites. These elements help assess a country's readiness to develop its travel and tourism sector.
