The trade exchange between Algeria and Brazil has reached nearly $2.3 billion in the first eight months of 2026, marking a slight decline of 4.6% compared to the same period in the previous year. This information comes from the Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry, and Commerce. Despite this moderate decline in overall trade, Brazilian exports to Algeria continue to show growth, contrasting with the decline in Brazilian imports from Algeria.

The structure of trade between the two countries from January to August reveals a particularly contrasting trend. Brazilian exports to Algeria increased by 6.6% to $1.6 billion. In contrast, Algerian shipments to Brazil plummeted by 22.7% to $728.8 million. This imbalance has led to a significant increase in Brazil's trade surplus, rising by 53.3% to $905.6 million.

The mainstay of Brazilian exports to Algeria remains sugar and iron ore. Sugar sales reached $445.6 million, despite a 23.6% annual decline. Meanwhile, iron ore exports saw a remarkable surge of 72.5%, totaling $442.9 million. Brazil's agricultural and mining offerings were complemented by significant deliveries of soybeans, corn, and beef.

On the other hand, the hydrocarbon sector and its derivatives continue to dominate Algerian exports to Brazil. Crude oil maintained its top position with $532.6 million recorded at the end of August, showing remarkable stability compared to the same period in 2025, with a marginal negative variation of 0.09%. However, other sectors experienced significant declines.

Algerian exports of nitrogenous fertilizers suffered a 35.6% drop to $119.7 million, while refined petroleum products experienced a severe decline of 66.1%, stabilizing at $66.2 million. These trends indicate a shift in the composition of Algerian exports to Brazil.

The decline in Algerian exports to Brazil is a concerning trend, particularly given the country's efforts to diversify its economy. Algeria has been working to reduce its dependence on hydrocarbons and increase its non-oil exports. However, the data suggests that this transition is still in progress.

The trade relationship between Algeria and Brazil is significant, with both countries seeking to strengthen their economic ties. The Brazilian government has been actively promoting trade with Algeria, and the two countries have been working to increase their cooperation in various sectors.
