Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and Minister of National Defense, has appointed Brigadier General Ali Sidane as the new commander of the National Gendarmerie, succeeding Brigadier General Sid Ahmed Broomana. This appointment was announced on October 9, 2026. General Sidane's mission will focus on combating drug trafficking, smuggling, terrorism, and sabotage. He will also oversee maintaining security, public order, and general tranquility across the country.

General Sidane's background includes commanding the First Military Region since August 2018. He has held various leadership positions, including commanding the Military Academy of Various Arms in Cherchell, Tipaza Province. The Military Academy, also known as the "Late President Houari Boumédiène" Academy, is a prominent institution for training officers and cadres in the People's National Army. General Sidane's experience is expected to enhance the operational capabilities of the National Gendarmerie.

Upon assuming his new role, General Sidane met with cadres and personnel of the National Gendarmerie, where he delivered a guidance speech broadcast to all units via video conferencing. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong relationship with citizens, which he considers the primary source of success in their work. General Sidane highlighted the need for continuous improvement in this aspect and prioritizing it.

General Saïd Chengriha, Chief of Staff of the People's National Army, welcomed General Sidane's appointment and stressed that the National Gendarmerie is a fundamental pillar of security and stability in Algeria. He praised the Gendarmerie's effective role in protecting borders, combating terrorism, sabotage, and drug trafficking, as well as safeguarding strategic areas and sensitive sites. General Chengriha urged Gendarmerie personnel to work with dedication, perseverance, and sacrifice to honor their duties and serve their country.

General Chengriha also emphasized the importance of leadership and the responsibility that comes with commanding men with professionalism, integrity, and dedication. He highlighted the need for wise and careful handling of subordinates, providing them with the necessary care and support. This includes attention to their training and preparation to ensure they can perform their duties effectively in all circumstances.

Brigadier General Sid Ahmed Broomana, the outgoing commander, had been leading the National Gendarmerie since December 21, 2025, after serving as acting commander since April 2025. General Broomana's tenure saw significant efforts in maintaining security and combating crime. General Sidane now faces the challenge of building on this progress while addressing emerging security concerns.

The National Gendarmerie's role is crucial in Algeria's fight against organized crime, terrorism, and smuggling. General Sidane's mission will involve disrupting and foiling the activities of smuggling networks and drug barons, as well as addressing threats to national security. His appointment is seen as a strategic move to enhance the country's security capabilities, particularly given Algeria's geographical location and the tensions along its eastern and western borders.
