The Akwa Ibom state judiciary has made significant progress in the 2025/2026 Legal Year, disposing of 15,294 cases and generating N437.4m in revenue. Chief Judge, Justice Ekaete Francisca Fabian-Obot, disclosed this information during the opening of the 2026/2027 Legal Year at the Judiciary Headquarters in Uyo. The ceremony featured a parade review and a special court session, which reviewed the performance, challenges, and progress of the state's justice system.
A breakdown of the cases handled during the year revealed that the High Court started with 8,518 pending cases, received 4,732 new cases, and disposed of 4,797, leaving 8,453 cases pending as of August 2026. The pending high court cases comprised 1,957 criminal cases, 4,120 civil cases, 1,163 motions, and 1,278 fundamental rights cases. This information was provided by the Chief Judge, highlighting the court's efforts in managing its caseload.
The magistrates' courts also made significant progress, with 6,043 cases pending at the beginning of the legal year. During the year, 5,883 new cases were filed, and 5,869 cases were disposed of, leaving 6,057 pending cases. Additionally, the district courts commenced the year with 6,045 pending cases, received 5,295 new cases, and disposed of 4,370, leaving 6,970 cases pending. These numbers demonstrate the court's continued efforts to address its backlog.
The Multi-Door Courthouse, a specialized court for civil cases, recorded 184 outstanding civil cases, received 196 new cases, and disposed of 258, leaving 122 pending. Furthermore, the Probate Directorate published 1,377 notices for the grant of Letters of Administration and processed and released 1,100 Letters of Administration. The Probate Court also received 216 cases, disposing of 138 and leaving 78 pending.
On revenue generation, the judiciary exceeded its approved target of N96.5m, generating N437.4m during the legal year. This significant achievement demonstrates the court's efforts to improve its financial management and contribute to the state's revenue.
