The PBAT-KOH 2027 Football Initiatives, which aims to blend grassroots sports development with civic and political engagement, was unveiled in Lagos on Thursday. The initiative is led by the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, who heads the Contact and Mobilisation Sub-Committee on Sports. The unveiling ceremony, held at Radisson Blu in Victoria Island, Lagos, was attended by top sports personalities and people from all walks of life.

Former Super Eagles player Waidi Akanni and five-time Olympian Bose Kaffo have thrown their weight behind the KOHmmunity Football Cup. Akanni, a former chairman of the Lagos Football Association, has donated a giant trophy to be contested for by football players from all parts of Lagos. Akanni expressed his happiness in being part of the initiative, describing it as a great idea.

The KOHmmunity Football Cup, a one-day football festival, is slated for November and aims to drive civic engagement, youth participation, and community integration across Lagos. The tournament leverages the unifying power of football to achieve its objectives. According to Lekan Fatodu, the chairman of the PBAT-KOH 2027 Contact and Mobilisation Sub-Committee on Sports, the initiative targets individuals aged 18 to 35, linking soccer engagement to voter participation.

The initiative is also aimed at fusing grassroots sports with civic awareness, establishing a decisive grassroots base for the ruling APC candidates ahead of the 2027 elections. Fatodu emphasized that the tournament is a vehicle to encourage youth to be actively involved in the coming election. Bose Kaffo, the secretary of the PBAT-KOH 2027 Contact and Mobilisation Sub-Committee on Sports, highlighted the importance of bringing out data on the number of people in sports in Lagos State.

Bose Kaffo, who competed in five Olympic Games from Barcelona 1992 to Beijing 2008, urged all sportsmen and women to be part of the initiative. She noted that this is the first time sports is playing an active role in electionary campaigns. Other top sports personalities who attended the unveiling ceremony include the Chairman of the Lagos Football Association, Gafar Liameed, and the Chief Executive Officer of Ikorodu City FC, Sanni Doherty.

The acronym for the KOHmmunity Football Cup represents President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (PBAT) and Lagos State Deputy Governor/Governorship Aspirant Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat (KOH). The initiative seeks to create a platform for youth to engage in both sports and civic activities. By combining sports and civic engagement, the organizers aim to promote a more participatory and inclusive democratic process.

The KOHmmunity Football Cup is set to make a significant impact in Lagos, with its unique approach to grassroots sports development and civic engagement. As the tournament approaches, expectations are high for its success and the potential it holds for promoting youth participation and community integration. With the support of prominent figures like Waidi Akanni and Bose Kaffo, the initiative is poised to achieve its objectives and make a lasting impact in the sports sector.
