Airtel Nigeria has received commendations from State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs) in Borno and Cross River states for its significant contributions to improving learning environments and access to digital education. The commendations were in recognition of the company's interventions under the Airtel Africa Foundation’s School Adoption Programme. The programme has had a positive impact on schools in both states.
In Borno State, Dr. Bulama Kagu, Executive Chairman of the Borno State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), commended Airtel for responding to the needs of Gwange III Primary School, Maiduguri. Airtel renovated classrooms, provided furniture, WASH facilities, and digital learning facilities. Kagu expressed satisfaction with Airtel's social responsibility efforts and called for similar interventions in other schools.
The Head Teacher of Gwange III Primary School, Hajiya Fatimatu Ladan, appreciated Airtel's intervention, describing it as a significant milestone for the school. The renovated classrooms, improved toilets, furniture, tree-planting and gardening initiatives, and the establishment of an ICT Centre as a Digital Community have created a safer, more comfortable and technology-enabled learning environment for pupils and teachers.
In Cross River State, Fidelia Opko Ene, Executive Chairman of the Cross River State Universal Basic Education Board (CRSUBEB), applauded Airtel Nigeria and the Airtel Africa Foundation for completing similar projects at Presbyterian Primary School, Ediba. Ene described the organisation's work as a significant contribution to improving teaching and learning.
The projects undertaken by Airtel Africa Foundation’s School Adoption Programme aim to improve the quality of education in Nigeria. By providing digital learning facilities and renovating classrooms, Airtel is helping to create a more conducive learning environment for pupils. Kagu urged the school management to ensure the facilities and ICT tools are appropriately maintained. He added that SUBEB would deploy coordinators to monitor the facilities and ensure they continue to serve their intended purpose. This will ensure the sustainability of the projects and their continued impact on the school community.
Airtel Nigeria's CEO, Carl Cruz, was not available for comment. However, the company's efforts have been recognised by various stakeholders in the education sector.
