Africa World Airlines (AWA) has taken delivery of its first Embraer E190 aircraft, marking the start of a planned expansion that will eventually add ten new jets to its fleet. The aircraft was unveiled at the Accra International Airport under the theme "Expanding Horizons, Elevating West African Connectivity." This move is part of AWA's efforts to strengthen connectivity across the sub-region. The airline has flown more than five million passengers since it began operations in 2012.
The Embraer E190 aircraft has a capacity of 102 seats, configured with 14 premium economy seats and 88 economy seats. AWA's Chief Executive, Luolin Cui, described the new jet as the start of a fresh chapter for the airline. He stated that every aircraft the company operates should tell a Ghanaian story and carry Ghanaian pride. The airline's workforce is 97% Ghanaian, reflecting its commitment to local employment.
The expansion lands at a moment when Ghana's domestic aviation sector continues to grapple with capacity and cost pressures. Local airlines face high operating costs driven by dependence on imported inputs, foreign exchange expenses, and customs duties. Limited passenger numbers and restricted airport operating hours also affect how efficiently aircraft can be used, which in turn weighs on profitability.
AWA's Managing Director, Yvonne Botchey, speaking on behalf of AWA's Executive Chairman, Tobe Afede XIV, noted that the airline only paid its first dividend after 13 years of operation. This underscores how difficult it has been to run an airline profitably in Ghana. For ordinary travellers, more aircraft in AWA's fleet could translate into more available seats and route options on domestic and regional trips.
The Ghanaian government is investing in aviation infrastructure to support growth in air travel. Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe said a connecting concourse is being built between Terminals 2 and 3 at Kotoka International Airport to ease transfers between domestic, regional, and international flights. He also cited ongoing airport works in Bolgatanga, Wa, and Sunyani, and runway expansion at Kumasi International Airport to accommodate bigger planes.
Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie said better air links are essential for tourism and cultural exchange. She noted that travel between African countries can still involve long, inefficient routes. AWA's fleet expansion fits into Ghana's ambition to become a stronger regional hub for air travel. The airline has not detailed how the expansion will affect ticket prices.
AWA has not given a timeline for when the remaining nine aircraft in its planned fleet expansion will arrive. The unveiling comes as the airline marks 14 years of operations and follows its relaunch of the Accra-Abidjan route in July. The airline's growth plans are expected to enhance connectivity and provide more travel options for passengers in West Africa.
