The African Development Bank (AfDB) has published a report that highlights the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to drive positive change and socio-economic transformation in Africa. According to experts, AI can stimulate economic growth, create new industries, and generate job opportunities. The report, titled "Gains de productivité grâce à l'IA en Afrique: voies vers l'efficacité du travail, la croissance économique et une transformation inclusive," was developed in collaboration with the G20's Digital Transformation Working Group and consulting firm Bazara Tech.

The report reveals that an inclusive deployment of AI could generate up to $1 trillion, or 568,000 billion FCFA, in additional GDP by 2035. This represents nearly a third of the continent's current economic production. The study attributes Africa's potential for AI-driven growth to its increasing digital capacity, favorable demographics, and ongoing sectoral reforms. As a result, Africa is considered one of the most promising regions in the world for AI-driven growth.

The AfDB's report identifies five priority sectors that are expected to capture 58% of the total gains linked to AI in Africa. These sectors include agriculture (20%), wholesale and retail trade (14%), manufacturing and Industry 4.0 (9%), finance and inclusion (8%), and health and life sciences (7%). The report emphasizes that AI-driven gains will be concentrated in specific sectors rather than being evenly distributed across the continent's economy.

The African Development Bank's strategic roadmap for AI aims to unlock the technology's potential for economic and social development. By harnessing AI, Africa can accelerate its economic and digital transformation. The report provides an overview of the opportunities and challenges associated with AI adoption in Africa, highlighting the need for a coordinated approach to maximize the benefits of AI.

According to the AfDB, AI has the potential to drive innovation, entrepreneurship, and job creation in Africa. The technology can also enhance productivity, efficiency, and competitiveness in various sectors. However, the report notes that realizing these benefits will require investments in digital infrastructure, education, and skills development.

The Cameroonian newspaper Cameroon Tribune reported on the AfDB's report, citing the potential for AI to drive growth and development in Africa. The article highlights the importance of harnessing AI to capitalize on new opportunities and drive socio-economic transformation.

As Africa continues to accelerate its economic and digital transformation, the AfDB's report provides a timely and informative guide for policymakers, business leaders, and stakeholders. By understanding the opportunities and challenges associated with AI adoption, Africa can unlock the technology's full potential and drive sustainable and inclusive growth.
