The African Import-Export Bank (Afreximbank) has secured a $500 million facility, equivalent to 285.5 billion FCFA, to support intra-African trade and distribution. The agreement was signed with the Africa Trading and Distribution Company (ATDC) on September 21 in Cairo. This financing aims to strengthen trade exchanges and distribution chains across Africa. The facility will enable ATDC to finance various operations related to the purchase and aggregation of African products.
The financing will cover needs related to transportation, warehousing, logistics, and distribution. The objective is to facilitate the circulation of goods throughout the value chains. ATDC, created with Afreximbank's support, is a pan-African platform that connects producers, processors, industries, and markets. Its initial activities were launched in Egypt and have since expanded to Nigeria, Malawi, and Zimbabwe. With this new facility, ATDC aims to enhance its offer aggregation and working capital financing capacities.
Kanayo Awani, Executive Vice President of Afreximbank, stated that this financing will contribute to improving the distribution of "Made in Africa" products and deepening regional value chains. She believes this operation can increase access to markets for African producers, support exports of manufactured products, and accompany the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Stewart Makura, CEO of ATDC, emphasized the need for systems that effectively connect producers to markets. The facility should strengthen supply chains, promote value creation, and support import substitution. Beyond financing individual commercial operations, the agreement aims to improve the regional availability of raw materials, inputs, and value-added products.
The financing will also support the transformation of African products locally. By facilitating the circulation of products and their access to various African markets, the $500 million facility will develop regional value chains and strengthen the position of African products in international trade. Afreximbank aims to support the commercial infrastructure necessary for increased economic integration of the continent and the effective implementation of AfCFTA.
The partnership between Afreximbank and ATDC is expected to promote the development of reproducible commercial corridors on a larger scale, relying on supply and distribution networks. This collaboration will enhance the competitiveness of African products and increase their presence in regional and international markets.
The new facility is a significant step towards achieving the objectives of AfCFTA, which aims to create a single, unified African market. By supporting intra-African trade and distribution, Afreximbank and ATDC are contributing to the economic integration and development of the continent.
