The African Democratic Congress has strongly criticized Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, for his recent comments threatening to prevent Rotimi Amaechi, the party's vice-presidential candidate, from campaigning in Rivers State. Wike made the comments during a news briefing in Abuja, warning Amaechi that he might not be allowed to campaign in the state if he continued to criticize President Bola Tinubu and his supporters.
Wike's comments were in response to Amaechi's criticism of the President and his administration. The FCT Minister accused Amaechi of misusing state funds during his eight-year tenure as governor of Rivers State, citing the alleged spending of $10 million on malaria fumigation and the sale of state-owned gas turbines for $308 million.
The ADC Publicity Secretary in Rivers State, Chizy Enyi, responded to Wike's comments, stating that the party would not ignore the Minister's remarks due to their significance. Enyi argued that Wike has no right to stop Amaechi from campaigning in Rivers State, a state where Amaechi previously served as governor.
Enyi also questioned Wike's motives, pointing out that as a former Chief of Staff to Amaechi and a minister under the same administration, Wike should be familiar with Amaechi's activities. Enyi challenged Wike to provide evidence of the alleged crimes, asking why he had not ensured prosecution if he had proof.
The ADC spokesperson emphasized that television studios are not courtrooms and that political insults do not constitute evidence. Enyi urged Wike to present his evidence to the relevant authorities, stressing that Nigerians deserve facts rather than political name-calling.
The party also criticized Wike's warning that Amaechi would find it difficult to campaign in Rivers State, describing it as an attempt to intimidate and restrict Amaechi's constitutional rights. The ADC argued that Rivers State belongs to its people, not to any individual, and that Amaechi does not require Wike's permission to campaign or seek votes.
The ADC called on security agencies to take note of Wike's remarks and ensure that the constitutional rights and safety of all political actors are protected. The party emphasized its commitment to presenting Nigerians with a credible alternative, restoring accountable leadership, and ensuring that Rivers people can freely choose their leaders without fear.
